2012 College Football Betting: Weekend Preview For Bowl Games On December 22

Game 1: New Orleans Bowl

East Carolina Pirates vs. Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns – Saturday, December 22

College football betting websites would not dispute the claim that East Carolina comes into its bowl game with Louisiana-Lafayette as a program intent on reclaiming excellence. ECU went to five consecutive postseason games before missing out last year, so the boys from Greenville, N.C., have some business to tend to in New Orleans. While the Pirates aren’t particularly as strong as they have been in past seasons, they rely on quarterback Shane Carden to lead the nation’s 35th-ranked pass attack. At 2,838 yards and 21 touchdowns, Carden’s favorite weapon has been Justin Hardy, who has put up 1,046 yards and 10 touchdowns on the year. The Pirates have one of the elite red zone offenses in the country scoring on 92 percent of their drives inside the 20, with over 70 percent of those resulting in touchdowns. Reggie Bullock was a 1,000-yard back on the season, though as a whole the Pirates struggled running the ball as a team. The Pirates have been one of the least penalized teams in college football in 2012 with

only about 4.6 penalties per game. Winners of three straight games coming into bowl season, the Pirates turned things around in the middle of the season after a 3-3 start had them looking questionable for a bowl bid. Despite a tiebreaking loss to Central Florida in the East division of Conference USA, the Pirates did manage to go 7-1 in league play. They have plenty of reasons to recommend them in this contest from a legal online sports betting perspective.

When you pore over the numbers in an online sportsbook, it’s going to be hard to pick against East Carolina in this game. All in all, the fact that ULL won the New Orleans Bowl last year will probably take some of the shine away from this year’s event. ECU will play with more of a spark, and that is often the difference in bowl games. Take the Pirates over the Cajuns here.

Game 2: Las Vegas Bowl

Washington Huskies vs. Boise State Broncos – Saturday, December 22

When going to any online outlet to make a college football betting play, you should realize that Boise State’s defense is extremely consistent and should enjoy a noticeable matchup advantage against Washington’s sputtering offense. As has been the case with Boise State for over a decade now, whenever things look bleak, you can count on the Broncos’ defense to lead the way. With the massive turnover that occurred on offense in the offseason, Boise State knew that it had to be elite defensively if the Broncos were to have any chance of competing at a level they’ve become accustomed to under head coach Chris Petersen. The defense has responded with a top 10 national ranking and one of the best turnover margins in all of college football. The Broncos have a knack for getting after the quarterback, averaging almost three sacks per game, and have been one of the top teams in terms of red zone defense.

One thing that can’t be overlooked going to the bowl season with Boise State is Petersen’s track record in games with weeks or months to prepare. While the Broncos dropped their opener to Michigan State this year on the road, the fact remains that Petersen almost always has his teams ready to play coming out of extended layoffs. With a three-game bowl win streak, the Broncos will use this upcoming postseason to put the exclamation point on another double-digit win campaign as the Broncos prepare to head to the Big East next year.
